How to Double Your Holiday Sales ?

We’ve made it through 2016 and what do you know? It’s holiday season again! Of course, if you’re a business this can be an exciting time as many companies can churn out an entire year’s worth of sales out in just a few short weeks. However, the flip side of the equation is that every sale that you generate during the holiday season takes hours of planning and preparation time. In fact, sometimes management goes through the trouble to ready their teams for holiday sales only to see their efforts flop.

Given that we’re already smack dab in the middle of the holidays, there’s little time to recover if you make a mistake. Fortunately, you don’t have to go down the wrong path this year, not when you can learn from the successes and failures of someone who has already traveled the same road many times up until now.

Indeed as someone who has managed many a holiday marketing campaign, I can tell you that one of the best things you can do to ensure record sales is to implement a holiday SEO plan. You’d be surprised just how many organizations that fail to take this fundamental step. Don’t let this be you.

Instead, why not borrow a page from my holiday SEO strategy to help you ‘ring in’ or shall we say ‘ring up’ the holiday cheer! That said, what follows are ten SEO tips that you can apply to your holiday SEO plan right now.

1 – Set Your Holiday Business Goals

If you don’t know where you want to go, then you’re doomed from the start. So, before doing anything else, the first thing you need to do is define or learn the overall business objectives. If you own the business, this is just a matter of deciding which goals you’d like to achieve over the holiday period. If you manage the SEO and marketing for an employer, you’ll need to get with the company’s leadership to get this information.

2 – Assess Your Holiday SEO Readiness

One of the worst things you can do at this time of the year is assume that your SEO infrastructure is already up to par. Hence, this is the perfect time to evaluate where you stand regarding SEO preparedness. Whether you find good things or not, the important thing is that you know your strengths and weaknesses.

3 – Seasonal Keywords

Now that you’ve completed your seasonal SEO assessment, it’s time to do some serious keyword analysis. You can do this with the keyword research tool of your choice, including Google’s KW Planner, Moz, Wordstream, etc. As you’re analyzing the keywords, you want to focus on low hanging fruit. These would be seasonal search terms that possess measurable search volume and CPC rates but that have moderate to medium levels of competition. In addition to monitoring keywords, it would also be a good idea to keep tabs on high performing content pertaining to the holidays.

4 – The Freemium Business Model

Don’t underestimate the power of a freemium pricing strategy, especially during the holiday season. Here’s how it works. A business offers a free product or service in the hopes of attracting new business. However, the giveaway should work alongside a paid product or service.

Alternatively, some companies take the opposite route by rewarding your purchase with a free bonus that complements your purchase. You can adopt a similar strategy in the month of December. For example, you can offer free guaranteed delivery by the 25th to customers that buy on your website by a certain date.

5 – Tune Up Other Areas of Your Website that Could Use Attention

While you always want to take care of low performing areas of your site, this is particularly the case at this time of the year. For example, something as seemingly small as the speed of your website can make a tremendous impact on sales. That’s because while your visitors may tolerate a slow site any other time, they generally won’t tolerate it in this period of the year because time is in short supply during the shopping season. So use this time to minimize file sizes, install web optimizing plugins, etc.

6 – Holiday Friendly Meta Data

Do you have a holiday special that you want to push? Your meta titles and descriptions offer the perfect opportunity to do so. Although the days when meta titles and descriptions impacted rankings are long gone, surfers can still be swayed by polished meta description. So go ahead and add those merry descriptions!

7  – Review Your  Internal Links

Internal links are important in every season. However, given that patience runs thinner at this time of the year why not make it easier on your visitors by using internal linking to light a clear path to your holiday specials. It will take a small investment of time to re-map your keywords and pages according to your latest deals, but it will be worth it in the long term.

8 – Don’t Forget Your Mobile Users

The continued expansion of mobile devices into the marketplace means that businesses can expect even more mobile shopping this year than what we saw during the last holiday season. Given that over 50% of last year’s holiday sales came from mobile devices, that’s saying a lot! And when optimizing your site for mobile, don’t forget to simplify the checkout process, as well.

9 – Optimize Your Holiday Content, Now

Armed with both your SEO audit and updated keyword research you should be well-poised to build a holiday content plan. Doing so will not only help boost your seasonal search terms, but it will also benefit your users. But just in case you’re still unsure as to which topics to focus on, you can use free tools such as Feedly or Twitter search to help get the ideas flowing!

10 – Start Blogging

In addition to the items above, if you haven’t already done so, this is the perfect time to sharpen your pen and start blogging! Consumers love a good holiday-centric blog post. Plus, they don’t all have to be about Santa. In fact, you can also add calls to action (CTA) to some of them and use your CTAs to direct visitors to your holiday deals.

Speaking of Santa, it’s not too late to get some extra green added to your stockings. But don’t delay, December 25th will be here before you know it so use these next few days to clean up your website to do list, and you may just get a visit from Jolly Old St. Nick after all!
